How to tackle barriers in sport

    December 3, 2020 / 0 Comments

Hi guys, last week I listed some of the barriers which can occur when engaging in sport and this week I will be outlining how we can tackle these. There are many more which I haven’t mentioned, and you can find out more here. Lack of support So, what do you do if you do not have the support you need to begin or continue sport? Education and friendships Education is vital when you are growing up to ensure you set yourself in good stead for your future. However, the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle is also required and if that can be achieved through sports, then an…

Why can girls struggle to participate in sport?

    November 26, 2020 / 0 Comments

Many girls stop engaging in sport during their teenage years meaning that they are missing out on the benefits such as health and emotional wellbeing, which is arguably vital for growth and development.  I began horse riding around the age of 3 and continued to do so till I was 16 years old. There were many factors which contributed to me withdrawing, including: cost, education, resources and support. It wasn’t until a few years later that I realised how much sport benefitted me. It provided me with a purpose, it created a motivational drive in all aspects of my life, my physical and mental health improved and I gained a…

My (rather chaotic) journey to Higher Education – Casey’s Story

    November 12, 2020 / 0 Comments

Hey everyone, Casey here! I thought I would share with you all my journey of how I got to higher education. Everyone’s journey is very different, so hopefully sharing my experience can put a few people at ease! When I finished my GCSE’s, I went on to do A-Levels at a sixth form college in a different town from where I lived. I really enjoyed studying somewhere completely new. It meant I only knew one or two people at my college, but I quickly made new friends! I had always loved Maths and Physics in school as I really enjoyed working with numbers. So, I decided to study Maths, Physics,…

    My Journey into self-care and self-love – Sophie’s Story

    November 5, 2020 / 0 Comments

This morning I decided to get up at 5.30am, run for 4.5km and give myself hair and face masks. All of this is self-care to me. I enjoyed it (even the run), and I felt great afterwards because I felt like I was showing myself and my body respect. I also felt like I was making time to progress with my goals (even if it means getting up ridiculously early!). So many of us lead such busy and hectic lives that we fail to leave any time for ourselves. Technology has such a strong hold over the world today. It’s almost like we are numb to how we feel and…

    Myths vs Reality!

    October 29, 2020 / 0 Comments

Hi everyone!  Hope you have had a great week! I made my first ever nourish and yogurt bowl this week and I am hooked! Both are so easy to make and taste yummy 🙂 This week I am going to share with you the myths I used to believe and religiously followed in order to be “healthy”.  Myth 1. You can’t eat at night. Truth: Whether you consume 100 calories at 9am or 100 calories at 9pm, you are still consuming the same amount. However, there are some factors you might want to consider when reaching for that late-night snack, such as, what sort of food are you about to consume? Studies have shown that food…

Why I felt anxious about sport and how I overcame it! – Sophie’s Story

    October 15, 2020 / 0 Comments

Hi everyone! In case you haven’t seen our recent posts, I am Sophie and I will be creating content surrounding women and their participation in sport, including ways to live a healthy and active lifestyle. Just some context about myself, I graduated from university in 2019 with BSc (Hons) Major Sport Studies and Minor Physical Education as well as completing a HND Sport, Coaching and Physical Education course. I love animals (especially my horses and dogs) and being outdoors. My hobbies include reading, eating and most recently, watching The Great British Bake Off. So today I want to talk about how women (myself included) can experience anxiety at the thought…

    Hi, I’m Charlie

    June 4, 2020 / 1 Comment

Hi, my name’s Charlie (if you hadn’t have guessed from the title!) I now work on behalf of a project, Aimhigher Plus, that talks about different education routes and next steps. I’ve created this blog, alongside some of my friends and work colleagues, to share their stories about the realities of education and to show the stories of how we got where we are. But you want to know more about me, because this is probably why you’re here, reading this… I’m an only child which means my parents were particularly protective over me and lived a pretty sheltered life. I admit I’m particularly fortunate that that side of things…
